About the MARIAL Center

INTRODUCING THE MARIAL CENTER

Emory University's Center on Myth and Ritual in American Life (MARIAL) is one of five Sloan Centers on Working Families, supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation's Program on Dual-Career Working Middle Class Families.

The Emory Center focuses its research on the functions and significance of ritual and myth in dual wage-earner middle-class families in the American South.

The Center has four basic purposes:

  • To promote scholarly studies of myth and ritual among working families in the Southeastern United States.
  • To train the next generation of scholars to focus attention on American middle-class families.
  • To publicize our findings through scholarly channels and more broadly through the media.
  • To find ways to use the insights gained from our research to encourage and foster positive social change.

DIRECTIONS TO THE MARIAL CENTER

The MARIAL Center is located on the 4th floor of the main building of Emory's Briarcliff Campus, 1256 Briarcliff Road. There is ample parking close to the building. Alternatively, you may take the Emory shuttle (Route B). The Emory shuttle (Route B) provides transportation from the main campus to the MARIAL Center at approximately 15-minute intervals (a 5-15 minute ride). For the shortest travel time, board the shuttle on Clifton (@ Emory University Hospital), Clifton (@ Fishburne) or North De c atur Road (@ Fishburne Deck/Schwartz Center).  A complete schedule is available on the web at http://www.epcs.emory.edu/AltTransp/route_b.html
