'Working the Skies' is Readable and Enjoyable Story of Perils and Possibilities Flight Attendants Face, Reviewer Says
-- Working the Skies, by Drew Whitelegg, is part psychology, part history and part cultural study with plenty of personal tales from retired and active flight attendants, according to a review by Kristin Conard. She calls the book a readable, enjoyable tale of the perils and possibilities flight attendants face. The majority of flight attendants are women, which places the job in a unique historical and social context.

Whitelegg Book Presents 'Well-Documented Realities' of Flight Attendants, AP Writer Says
-- The 1960s image of a stewardess was that of a carefree woman, living a life of sex, drugs and never-ending voyage. But the mythological 'stews' are a far cry from the well-documented realities presented in Drew Whitelegg's new book, Working the Skies: The Fast-Paced, Disorienting World of the Flight Attendant, published by New York University Press. Using a series of interviews and focus groups with flight attendants of all ages, Mr. Whitelegg charts the arc of a profession barely seven decades old. A book review by The Associated Press.

Drew Whitelegg Explores Work Struggles of Flight Attendants In New Book
--Press release describes new book by Drew Whitelegg, former MARIAL postdoc and current director of special projects for MARIAL. “Working the Skies: The Fast-Paced, Disorienting World of the Flight Attendant,” finds that thousands of flight attendants have left their jobs since 9/11 because of layoffs, pay cuts and the emotional toll of a high stress job. Their replacements earn less, have less job security and face working conditions that make it difficult to balancework and family obligations.

Does Motherhood Impact Compensation on Wall Street?
--After a slew of high-profile sex discrimination lawsuits hit Wall Street in the 1990s, one might think the financial industry would have learned its lesson. Not so, says Louise Marie Roth author of Selling Women Short: Gender and Money on Wall Street (Princeton University Press 2006). Roth’s research illustrates how Wall Street’s myth of meritocracy permits America’s financial capital to continue to discriminate. Roth shared her findings in a lecture entitled, "Having It All? Workplace Culture and Work-Family Conflict on Wall Street," as part of the Colloquium series sponsored by the MARIAL (Myth and Ritual in American Life) Center at Emory University.
