Exhibit Opening, Oxford College Chapel
"A Dream Deferred: African Americans
at Emory and Oxford College, 1836-1968"
Thursday, January 18th, 2001, 4:00 p.m.
This exhibition, sponsored by the MARIAL Center,
explores the long relationship between a number of local African-American
families and Emory, concentrating on the "mother campus" in
Oxford, Georgia. It addresses such issues as remembering slavery
at Emory and Oxford, memories of labor, faith and community,
and narratives of racial violence.
The opening program, at 4:00 p.m in the Oxford
College Chapel, will involve representatives of local families
reflecting on the intertwined history of Emory and the African-American
community. The opening will be followed by a reception and viewing
of the exhibit in the Oxford College library.

DIRECTIONS TO OXFORD
Take I-20 east (towards Augusta) about 30 miles
(past Conyers). Exit at the first "Historic Covington" exit
(there will be a small sign for Oxford College before the exit).
Bear right onto 278 as you exit. At the third traffic light,
turn left onto Emory Street/81. Go north one mile on Emory Street
and there will be a sign for Oxford College on the left. Turn
left, go one block: the college will be in front of you; there
is parking to the left, near the Tennis Courts. The chapel is
the small neoclassical building at the far end of the quadrangle,
directly ahead of you as you enter campus.
