"Ceremonial Healing on the Northern Cheyenne
Reservation"
Wednesday, January 31st, 2001, 3:00 p.m.
[PLEASE NOTE that this semester MARIAL colloquia will begin
at 3pm]
Harrold (Vance) Littlebird is a Northern Cheyenne Indian from
Lame Deer, Montana. He is a member of Native American Church
and a practitioner of traditional Cheyenne ceremonial ways.
Mr. Littlebird conducts Peyote Meetings and sweats, and he carries
his father's ceremonial fasting way. Vance is also an accomplished
singer, and he often sings in Cheyenne public ceremonies and
Pow-wows. As a young man he danced the Pow-wow circuit. Vance
is a firm believer in the benefits of traditional Cheyenne ways.
He is one of many traditional Cheyennes who use ceremony to
adress the many problems faced by members of his tribe.
Vance will talk about the healing power of traditional
Cheyenne ceremony, and he will outline his hopes and plans for
the establishment of a traditional healing intervention for
at-risk youth on the reservation.
Special thanks to John Bing, Anthropology department,
for helping to arrange this colloquium.
