Moore's Ford Memorial Committee
"Rituals of Healing and Reconciliation:
Remembering Racial Violence in our Region"
Wednesday, January 24th, 2001, 4:00 p.m.
Robert Howard and Richard Rusk of the Moore's Ford Memorial
Committee will discuss their organization's efforts to commemorate
one of the most notorious lynchings in Georgia's history, the
1946 massacre of four African Americans in Monroe, Georgia.
This multiracial organization was formed in the wake of revelations
in the early 1990s about the killings and the complicity of
local community leaders in supressing the full facts of the
case. The speakers will discuss the ways in which their group
has tried to encourage new forms of narrative and "truth telling"
about this and many other instances of racial violence in local
history. They will also talk about the kinds of ceremonial and
practical activities they have engaged in and sponsored over
the past five years or so, including restoring cemeteries, story-telling,
art work, musical performances, and the sharing of food.
