MARIAL CENTER COLLOQUIUM

Dr. Margaret Perkinson
(Assistant Professor, Occupational Therapy and Department of
Anthropology, Washington University School of Medicine )

"Caregiver's Dilemmas: Sandwiched Between the Needs of Old and Young Family Members"

Friday, April 27th, 2001, 3:00 p.m.

The purpose of this informal discussion to consider the stresses upon,
and adaptations developed by, family caregivers -- almost always women
-- whose lives are sandwiched between the needs of their parents and
children. Issues of scheduling, ritualization of activities, multigenerational households and extended families, and the role of family in particularly American institutions like the nursing home. The goal is to examine the ways in which the "caregiver's dilemma" might fit into the MARIAL Center's goals of examining contemporary dual-income, middle class family life.

Margaret Perkinson is an anthropologist and geriatric researcher whose
work has focused on family caregivers, nursing homes, and dementia. Her
particular interest has been in family roles in taking care of the elderly in different setting like the home, different kinds of nursing homes and dementia special care units of medical facilities. Her research has been funded by the National Institute on Aging, NIMH, the Missouri Alzheimer's Disease Research Board, the AARP-Andrus Foundation, and the Alzheimer's Association.
