MARIAL CENTER COLLOQUIUM
Bradd Shore (Department of Anthropology,
Emory University and
Director, MARIAL Center)
"What's So Special About
Ritual?"
Lecture and Discussion
Wednesday, February 14th, 2001, 3:00 p.m.
Ritual has always been a topic of special interest
to anthropologists. But why?
The answer to this question is not self-evident, and calls for
us to take another
look at ritual as a very special sort of behavior with properties
that link it at once
to our mammalian heritage and to our deepest concerns with meaning-making.
This presentation will take the form of a lecture/discussion "workshop"
format
in which an informal talk laying out the distinctive "design
features" of ritual
will be punctuated by questions and conversation from the audience.
