Herve Varenne is a pioneer in the application of contemporary

anthropological theory and discourse analysis to the study of middle class

America. Born and raised in France, Varenne received his Ph.D. in

Anthropology from University of Chicago where he studied with David

Schneider and Milton Singer. His dissertation research in Appleton,

Wisconsin led to the publication in 1977 of a now classic monograph on

Middle Class America 1977 Americans Together: Structured Diversity in A

Midwestern Town (New York: Teachers College Press). His interest in the

American Family includes research on American discourse, including studies

of American family conversations (Ambiguous Harmony: Family Talk in America.

Convenient and quick transportation to Emory West is available every 10

minutes from the Campus via shuttle (Route W, which can be found on the

corner of Asbury Circle and Pierce Drive, Along Pierce Drive, or in Front of

the Administration Building). It is a 5 minute ride. Or you can drive and

park close in at Emory West, 1256 Briarcliff Rd. Tell the receptionist at

the front window that you are here for the MARIAL Center lecture.
