Coping with Death
and Dying in the American Family
Wednesday, March 20th, 2002, 3:00 p.m.
This talk concerns rituals of coping throughout
the dying process among middle class family caregivers in the
Atlanta metropolitan area. This issue is particularly relevant
given the aging of the American "baby boomers" and
the recent re-emergence of home-based hospice care in the United
States. Several case studies will be presented to illustrate
the different ways in which middle class families negotiate
challenges of domestic finance, time-management, and "burnout"
when caring for a dying loved one in both home and in-patient
hospice scenarios. Special emphasis will be given to how these
challenges can simultaneously bring further cohesion and fragmentation
to the American family. As this presentation is based upon a
pilot study, discussion will be geared toward directions for
further research.

Ron Barrett is a registered nurse and a doctoral
candidate in the Department of Anthropology at Emory University.
His dissertation research concerns the healing practices of
a tantric sect in Northern India with special emphasis on issues
of death and the stigma of leprosy. In addition to these pursuits,
he has spent the last year working as a nurse in an Atlanta-area
hospice. He is also teaching a hospice practicum for Emory undergraduates
this Spring in conjunction with Dr. Gary Laderman's course on
death and dying and the Emory theory-practice teaching initiative.
