Experience Monitoring
using a Palm Pilot and the PROUST System
Tuesday, September 24, 3:00-5:00 p.m.
This presentation will serve as a demonstration of a new
method for collecting user-driven 24-hour records of experience
that may be used as a platform for quantitative and qualitative
ethnographic research on participants' daily schedules. Under
the sponsorship of the MARIAL center, the Laboratory for Comparative
Human Biology in Emory's Anthropology department contracted
with a programmer to create PROUST for PalmOS v1.0, a program
that runs on the Palm Pilot PDA (hand computer). PROUST (an
acronym for Programmable Recording Of User-friendly Self report
through Time) takes control of the Palm Pilot and guides the
user, using a menu and icon-driven graphical interface, through
the process of recording daily activity logs retrospectively
throughout a 24-hour period. It is highly configurable, and
can thus be designed to work with nearly any research that
requires daily records of discrete experiences or events that
a participant can self-report. The content of this presentation
will be the program itself, its configuration process, and
its advantages and disadvantages over other methods. The specific
research questions that prompted the development of this program
were the topic of two workshops last year, and will not be
the central focus of this presentation, but we will review
them briefly to provide context.
