Fighting for Balance
Between Work and Family: A Labor Union Approach
Tuesday, October 22, 3:00-5:00 p.m.
How do labor union leaders fight for family friendly policies
in a weak economy where many workers feel lucky just to have
a job. What family friendly benefits do they request, and
what is their negotiating strategy when they approach management?
Is it a harder sell in the South, where labor unions have
not historically been very strong?
Ralph Williams, a graduate of Alabama A&M University,
has been advocating for workers' rights for more than six
years. He is president of SEIU Local 1985, which represents
public and private sector workers throughout Georgia. It is
affiliated with the AFL-CIO and the Service Employees International
Union, whose 1.5 millions members have helped strengthen public
services at every level. In Georgia, SEIU Local 1985 represents
hundreds of workers employed by Parking Company of America
at the airport, as well as Head Start Program workers in Atlanta.
