MARIAL CENTER COLLOQUIUM

Please note a very special and unusual MARIAL Event:

Friday, May 2, 2003 1:00 p.m.

Larry Harvey, founder of Burning Man
in a dialogue on "Ritual without Dogma: Art without Borders"

Larry Harvey, in conversation with Art Papers magazine's editor in-chief Charles Reeve, will discuss the history and philosophy of Burning Man, and explain what voids in our contemporary lives are filled by Black Rock City's unique annual society.

LARRY HARVEY founded the Burning Man event on a San Francisco beach in 1986. Four years later, this temporary summer society moved to Nevada's Black Rock desert where, every Labor Day weekend, tens of thousands of people gather to explore the possibilities of a grassroots gift economy as an alternative to mass culture and consumer society. Burning Man's population always includes artists from around the world,
many of whom produce elaborate art works at the site as expressions of the Burning Man experience and philosophy. Mr. Harvey will discuss the social, civic and economic context of art in Burning Man's temporary community, now known as Black Rock City.
