Between a Rock and a Low-Wage Job:
The Work/Family Crisis for Low-Income Parents
Wednesday, September 17, 4 - 6 p.m.
The MARIAL Center
Emory West, 4th Floor, Room 415E
The types and severity of problems low-income families
face are quite different from those of middle class working families.
The struggle for the basic necessities of life often takes precedence
over personal family time and rituals. As a result it can be said
that low wage working families experience ritual not as a function
of a healthy family unit, but rather as a means of coping with
the high stress lives that members of these families lead. Research
suggests that many of the integral services poor families depend
on, like child and health care, despite government subsidization,
are barely financially attainable.
Alleviating these burdens revolves around several
key factors. Low wageworkers must have stable jobs where flexibility
in scheduling is available. Also, having a network of friends
and extended family on hand is necessary when care needs surpass
the care system. Finally, legislation such as the Family Medical
Leave Act must be expanded to cover more people and more care
giving situations.
9to5 is a national nonprofit association of working women dedicated
to grassroots efforts to end workplace discrimination, improve
wages and working conditions, and expand family-friendly policies.
Since the organization began in 1973, 9to5 has earned a solid
reputation for providing expertise on a variety of workplace issues
such as sexual harassment, communication skills, balancing work
and family, job training, and retention.
Cindia Cameron coordinates 9to5's national program
campaigns, directs national organizing and hotline staff, and
provides leadership and program development assistance to local
chapters across the country. As a media spokesperson, Ms. Cameron
has been quoted in numerous publications including The New
York Times, Mademoiselle and The Atlanta Journal
Constitution in stories ranging from workplace monitoring
to work/family issues. She has been with 9to5 since 1983. She

Program, the Institute for Labor Education and Research, and the
Southern Appalachian Labor School at West Virginia Institute of
Technology.
