Labor Organizing and the Contradictions of Globalization
Wednesday, October 8, 4 - 6 p.m.
The MARIAL Center
Emory West, 4th Floor, Room 415E
Andrew J. Herod, associate professor of geography
at the University of Georgia, is an expert on labor, unionization
and globalization. His 2001 book, "Labor Geographies: Workers
and the Landscapes of Capitalism" provided a comprehensive
introduction to the emerging discipline of labor geography. Combining
innovative theoretical analysis with empirical case studies from
around the world, Herod examined the spatial contexts and scales
in which workers live, organize, and work to address particular
economic and political problems.
John Russo and Sherry Linkon, co-directors of the
Center for Working-Class Studies at Youngstown State University,
said the book "helps break down traditional academic barriers
between cultural and economic geography and labor studies. It
also compels labor unions to rethink their strategies in geographic
terms."
Herod received his bachelor's degree in social science
from the University of Bristol, a master's degree from West Virginia
University, and his doctorate from Rutgers University.
