MARIAL CENTER COLLOQUIUM

Gail Gibson Hunt
(executive director, National Alliance for Caregiving)

The Juggling Act:
How Well Do We Balance Work and Caregiving

Wednesday, November 12, 4 - 6 p.m.

 The MARIAL Center

Emory West, 4th Floor, Room 415E

The National Alliance for Caregiving (NAC) is a non-profit coalition created in 1996 to support family caregivers and the professionals who serve them. NAC's founding partners are the American Society on Aging, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging. The founding sponsor is Glaxo Wellcome. Current membership includes more than 30 national organizations, ranging from AARP to Visiting Nurse Associations of America.

In testimony before Congress, NAC Executive Director Gail Hunt reported that the national profile of the family caregiver is a 46-year-old baby boomer woman, who works AND spends an average of 18 hours per week caring for her 77-year-old mother. Approximately one-quarter of US households contain someone caring for an elderly relative or friend, and nearly 73 percent of these caregivers are women - our mothers and sisters, daughters and granddaughters.

According to the 1997 national caregiver survey conducted by NAC and AARP, 22.4 million US households contain someone caring for an older relative or friend. The value of family caregiving to society is estimated conservatively to represent nearly $257 billion per year, more than nursing home and home care expenditures combined. Yet these caregivers often feel isolated and experience stress from the burden of caregiving itself and from balancing caregiving, work, and other family responsibilities. Recognizing that family caregivers provide important societal and financial contributions toward maintaining the well being of older Americans, NAC was created to conduct research, develop national projects, and increase public awareness of the issues of family caregiving.
