Angie Cheek, a Rabun County native, teaches Advanced Placement Literature and Composition to seniors and is the facilitator for The Foxfire Magazine at Rabun County High School in Tiger, Georgia.

She has been selected STAR teacher six times and was twice chosen as Teacher of the Year. She was the recipient of the Clayton Rotary Club's Jean Harris Professional Service Award and their Citizenship Award. The local chapter of the Georgia Retired Teachers Association recognized her as Outstanding Educator. She is also co-editor of Foxfire 12, to be released by Random House Publishers

Foxfire (The Foxfire Fund, Inc.) is a non-profit, educational and literary organization based in Rabun County, Georgia. It’s learner-centered, community-based educational approach is advocated through a regional demonstration site (The Foxfire Museum and Heritage Center) grounded in the Southern Appalachian culture that gave rise to Foxfire, and a national program of teacher training and support that promotes a sense of place and appreciation of local people, community and culture as essential educational tools.

The Foxfire Magazine class provides real opportunities to learn life skills and connect with the community. A key mission is to record and preserve the history, culture, and language of the people of Appalachia.

A business teacher and an English teacher facilitate the class, which is taught by students trained in summer leadership seminars. Students in grades 9-12 (special education through Advanced Placement) work on the writing team or the marketing/subscription team.

The writers interview people from Appalachia on topics ranging from how they view God and their families, to what they think of their nation and the land. The writers, working independently on various articles, learn interviewing, camera, transcriber, and computer skills, as well as team building and leadership skills. They also learn to meet real-world deadlines. The marketing team handles subscriptions on a database, answers queries and complaints, and plans strategies to market the publication.

The magazine is a real business, with subscribers from all over the world. It has been published for nearly 40 years.
