MARIAL CENTER COLLOQUIUM
Bobbie Sullivan
(independent research psychologist,
principal investigator for study on air crew stress)
Stress, Social Support, and the Health of
Commercial Aircrews
Wednesday, October 20, 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m.
Dr. Bobbie Sullivan is the principal investigator
for the "Aircrew Stress Study," an ongoing multinational
research project focusing on the effects of occupational and psychosocial
stress on the health and well-being of professional pilots, flight
attendants, and aviation ground personnel.
Using both quantitative and qualitative measures,
the study has identified both family and non-family sources of social
support and interpersonal stress, and evidence for their role in
mediating the effects of occupational stress on the health and well-being
of the study's participants.
These findings will be discussed in terms of their
demographic and occupational correlates, highlighting similarities
and differences between pilots and flight attendants, and among
those who work in the various sectors of commercial aviation.
An independent research psychologist based in Hawaii,
Dr. Sullivan earned her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University
of Hawaii, where she was supported by an East-West Center Graduate
Degree Fellowship.
