MARIAL CENTER COLLOQUIUM
Sherri Grasmuck
(Professor of Sociology, Temple University)
Seeing the World in Neighborhood Baseball
Wednesday, October 19, 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m
Sherri Grasmuck is the author of Protecting Home: Class, Race, and Masculinity in Boys' Baseball (Rutgers University Press, 2005), an ethnographic exploration of a boys' baseball league in a gentrifying neighborhood of Philadelphia.
Protecting Home reveals the accommodations and tensions that characterize multicultural encounters in contemporary American public life. By showing how men and boys nurture each other and how bonds of friendship grow across class and racial divides, Dr. Grasmuck's book challenges popular stereotypes, forcing us to reconsider our assumptions about gender, class, and race.
Dr. Grasmuck is an award-winning teacher and prolific writer whose research interests include gender and kinship, masculinity, ethnicity, migration, community change, and children's sports.
She was educated at the University of Texas, earning her bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and doctorate in sociology there. She completed her postdoctoral training at Duke University’s Center for International Studies.
At Temple, she has served as chair of the sociology department, director of women’s studies and director of Latin American studies. She also is the coauthor of Between Two Islands: Dominican International Migration.
