Ralph LaRossa

(Professor of Sociology, Georgia State University)

"I'm Ready to Be Someone Else": Storying the Transition to Parenthood

Wednesday, December 7, 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m

Ralph LaRossa developed a sociological interest in family structure and change when he discovered that, by studying people during their transition to parenthood, he could see social processes that are generally beyond the researcher's view. Recently, he was a co-investigator on the Parenting Together Project, a combined experimental/qualitative study designed to increase men's involvement with children. The qualitative component, for which Dr. LaRossa was the project director, involved ethnographic observations of parent education classes--observations that, among other things, prompted an exploration into how, via language and narrative, the transition to parenthood is culturally crafted. These observations also helped to contextualize the study's experimental results (to be published in the Journal of Family Psychology). Among other works, Dr. LaRossa is the author of The Modernization of Fatherhood: A Social and Political History (University of Chicago Press, 1997), and co-editor of the Sourcebook of Family Theories and Methods: A Contextual Approach (Plenum Press, 1993). His latest research includes a content analysis of Father's Day and Mother's Day comic strips from 1945 to 1999 (Journal of Marriage and Family, 2000; Sex Roles, 2001), a study of the culture of fatherhood in the fifties (Journal of Family History, 2004), an historical analysis of "chronometrical childhood" and corporal punishment in the early twentieth century (Sociological Forum, 2001; Child Abuse and Neglect, 2004), and an examination of the role of grounded theory methods in qualitative family research (Journal of Marriage and Family, 2005). He is currently writing a book on American fatherhood during and after the Second World War.
