Consuming Kids: The Corporate Takeover of Childhood

A psychologist and award-winning producer, writer, and puppeteer, Susan Linn has written extensively about the effects of media and commercial marketing on children. Her recently published book, Consuming Kids, was praised in publications as diverse as The Wall Street Journal and Mother Jones. Dr. Linn is a co-founder of the national coalition Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood, and in 2000 she was appointed to the American Psychological Association’s Task Force on Advertising to Children.

Dr. Linn is internationally known for using puppets in child psychotherapy. She pioneered this work at Children’s Hospital Boston, where she used puppets to help children cope with their hospital experiences. She continues this work with the Children’s AIDS Program, a day care center and after school program for children affected by and infected with HIV.

She has written and appeared in a number of video programs designed to help children cope with issues ranging from mental illness to death and loss.

Her work has been featured on national TV and radio programs such as Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood, Today, Good Morning America, 60 Minutes, NPR’s All Things Considered and Marketplace. She is a prolific writer whose recent articles have appeared in The Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, Christian Science Monitor, The American Prospect and Newsweek.


DIRECTIONS TO THE MARIAL CENTER

The MARIAL Center is located on the 4th floor of the main building of Emory's Briarcliff Campus, 1256 Briarcliff Road. There is ample parking close to the building. Alternatively, you may take the Emory shuttle (Route A). The Emory shuttle (Route A) provides transportation from the main campus to the MARIAL Center every 20 minutes (a 5-10 minute ride). For the shortest travel time, board the shuttle in front of the B. Jones Center or at the corner of Dowman and Fishburne (across from Glenn Memorial) at approximately 4, 24, and 44 minutes after each hour.
