Bringing up Witches: Dilemmas of Religious Socialization in Pagan Families

Wednesday, February 15, 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m

This talk will examine a number of issues facing pagan individuals with children. Professor Neitz uses primarily ethnographic data from two different networks of witches, one an explicitly feminist network of women-only groups, and the other, a geographically based network of groups with both men and women.

Until very recently, witchcraft traditions maintained that circles consisted of initiated adults who constituted a group of priestesses and priests working as co-celebrants to create a magical ritual. As witches have moved toward a more congregational model, more people want to bring their children into their religious practice.

This talk explores a number of the ways that this is occurring; specifically, the development of new coming-of-age rituals for children, and the inclusion of children in home-based practices. Individuals in women-only groups face a special dilemma in that male children and male partners cannot easily be incorporated into their religious gatherings. The experiences of these women will be explored both in light of changing practices among witches, and a growing trend among families in the Untied States away from shared and exclusive religious commitments and/or identifications among family members.

Professor Neitz received her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and has been in the University of Missouri’s sociology department since 1980. Her areas of specialization include religion, gender, culture, and qualitative methods. She has been engaged in ethnographic research on women in effervescent religions, first Catholic Charismatics and more recently Neopagans.
