What National Time-Diaries Can and Cannot Tell Us about American Family Life
Wednesday, November 9, 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m
Director of the Americans' Use of Time Project at the University of Maryland, John P. Robinson is co-author of several books dealing with the use of time and quality of life, including Time for Life (with G. Godbey, Penn State Press, 1999). In the complexities and sensitivities of the “subtle revolution” in work and family life in the later 20th Century, Dr. Robinson uses time-diary evidence from 1965 to the present to analyze continuities and changes in the relative amounts of time mothers and fathers spend on market work, housework, children, sleep, TV and other ways of spending time. Unlike similar studies, he also considers parents’ subjective experience of their use of time. His forthcoming book with Suzanne Bianchi and Melissa Milkie, Changing Rhythms of American Family Life, offers some provocative and controversial answers to such questions as: How have parental practices been impacted by increased parents' work hours? How have the relative contributions of men and women to market work, family, and alternative pursuits changed – and with what implications for gender equality now and in the future? Dr. Robinson has also recently published widely on the social implications of the Internet, and is an advocate for a new approach to social science research called “representative ethnography.” In this talk, he addresses the critical question: What can national time-diaries tell us about American family life, and not tell us?
