MARIAL CENTER COLLOQUIUM

Jeffry John Stein

(Writer, producer, educator)

"Slaying the father" and Other Paradigms of Growth in Movies About American Families

Wednesday, January 18, 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m

Using concepts from his recently published book, Life, Myth and the American Family Unreeling: The Spiritual Significance of Movies for the 20 th Century, Jeffry John Stein will explore the “slaying the father” path of personal, familial, and societal transformation. He will discuss this theme as it is integrated in exceptional feature films with the socio-mythic gauntlet to cosmo-mythic salvation and the being/becoming paradox of growth.  To illustrate, Stein will show clips from such films as Our Town, Rebel Without a Cause, Pleasantville, and American Beauty.

Stein was a producer and/or executive in charge of development and production for such features as Dead Ringers, The Beastmaster, Evilspeak, Fade To Black, and John and Norma Novak. In addition, he has written fifteen screenplays, including Harry the Mercy Killer (optioned by Richard Pryor), Heartstopper (commissioned by Priority Films), and The Q-Secret (a miniseries developed for TBS). His expertise in both telling stories and understanding storytelling also percolates through his political thriller novel, Gentlemen of Decision.

Throughout his career, Stein has been an educator, beginning as a high school English teacher in Sunnyvale and Beverly Hills, California. He is a founding faculty member of the Watkins College of Art and Design Film School in Nashville, where he teaches producing and production management, screenwriting, and physical production. He also taught at National University in Los Angeles and Tennessee State University in Nashville. He has delivered presentations and taught workshops across the country, including summer institutes at the University of South Carolina, Virginia Tech and Radford Universities (VA), Aurora University (WI), Vanderbilt University (TN), UUA General Assembly (Boston), The Mountain and Lake Junaluska Retreats (NC), and the Center for Studies of the Future (CA).

Stein grew up on Long Island. He received a B.A. in English from Dartmouth College and two master’s degrees from Stanford University, one in English Education, and one in Communications with a Specialization in Film. He has continued his education at numerous producing and writing workshops and conferences with such masters as John Truby, Maurice Singer, and Dean Koontz.

After years in Hollywood, Stein now lives in Nashville where, in addition to teaching, he operates Hero’s Path Productions.
