Cindy Aron

Working at Play: Why Can't Americans Relax on Vacation?

Wednesday, April 18, 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m

Cindy Aron, an authority on U.S. social and women’s history, is a history professor at the University of Virginia. She wrote Working at Play, a critically acclaimed book on the history of vacations in the United States from 1820 to 1940. She is interested in the ways in which Americans manipulated the shifting relationship between work and leisure.

Professor Aron’s previous writings include Ladies and Gentlemen of the Civil Service: Middle-Class Workers in Victorian America; The Education-Entertainment Continuum: A Historical Perspective, Perspectives; Contributors in the Public Realm, Reviews in American History; Vacations and Resorts in Eric Foner and John A. Garraty, eds. The Reader’s Encyclopedia of American History; and To Bear Their Souls for Gold: Female Clerks in Federal Government Offices, 1862-1890, Journal of American History.

Professor Aron received her bachelor’s degree from Brandeis and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Maryland. Her current project is a history of prostitution in the United States from 1945 to 1980.


DIRECTIONS TO THE MARIAL CENTER

The MARIAL Center is located on the 4th floor of the main building of Emory's Briarcliff Campus, 1256 Briarcliff Road. There is ample parking close to the building. Alternatively, you may take the Emory shuttle (Route B). The Emory shuttle (Route B) provides transportation from the main campus to the MARIAL Center at approximately 15-minute intervals (a 5-15 minute ride).
