STUDENTS RESPOND TO THE CEMETERY

As they learned about the Oxford African American cemetery and helped the community restore this historic site, the students of Dr. Auslander’s Sociology 101 class shared their reflections about the cemetery and its rich history.

"...segregation and racism prevail even after death."

Karla Caraballo

"The African-American section of the Oxford Historical Cemetery is fascinating. .... this section of the cemetery is full of history that is very significant to the history of the city of Oxford as well as Oxford College."

Marie A. Altidor

"To see first hand the different levels of care given to the African American and the white portions of the cemetery really made me think about the continued discrimination in our society."

Dina N. Ransel

"As many other class members have noted, I too, have greatly enjoyed the study and restoration project that we have been doing at African American Cemetery. To me, respect transcends all races...how sad it is that respect was not shown for so many years to the African Americans in the same way that it was shown to the whites."
