The predominantly African American sections of the Oxford City cemetery occupy the northern and western sections of the cemetery (the southeastern section of the cemetery was historically reserved for whites.) We believe that the northeastern area (NE1 & NE2) of the cemetery, immediately north of the historically white area, is the oldest part of the African American cemetery, with graves that presumably date back to the late 1830s. The earliest extant headstone in the African American cemetery is Rev. Potter, d. 1851) in the NE2 section.
